SACRAMENTO, CA - A man was stuck waist deep in quicksand along the Sacramento River for an hour and a half Thursday around 9:15 p.m.

Firefighters pumped water into the mud around the victim's legs to loosen the quicksand and freed him.

Mother's Day treat: Homemade scones

I have never been a big fan of scones.  They have always been a bit dry for my taste.  That all changed thanks to Barbara Bowers of Rose Mountain Manor in Colfax, CA.  Barbara and her wonderful recipe were featued on News10 Midday and News10.net back in October of 2002.  From that point on, this recipe has been a staple for special events and just because.

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 6 tabelspoons softened butter
  • 2 eggs

Congresswoman Matsui Introduces Safe and Complete Streets Legislation

Congresswoman Matsui Introduces Safe and Complete Streets Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) introduced the Safe and Complete Streets Act of 2011, legislation that would require each state’s department of transportation and metropolitan planning organization to put in place a Complete Streets policy that ensures all Federally-funded transportation projects accommodate the safety and convenience of all users. Complete Streets policies ensures roadways are built with all users in mind – including bicyclists, public transportation vehicles and riders, motorists, freight vehicles, and pedestrians of all ages and abilities. This bipartisan legislation is cosponsored by Congressman Steven LaTourette (R-OH).

“Complete Streets policies are a win-win for local communities: they save lives and create forward-looking projects that provide lasting value,” Matsui said.

Sacramento mom accused of child neglect, animal cruelty

SACRAMENTO, CA - A neighbor's report she saw a child choking a dog in the front yard of a nearby house has led to the removal of five children from the home and their mother's arrest for child neglect and animal cruelty, say Sacramento police.

Officer Laura Peck said the report came in at 6:24 Tuesday evening of the choking incident on the 2200 block of Arliss Way. Responding officers talked to the child's 32-year-old mother. She was arrested and her children, ages 1, 3, 7, 11 and 14, were placed in the care of Child Protective Services.

Peck said officers described the house as in deplorable condition and unfit for children. The dogs - there were two pit bulls - appeared to be malnourished and required care, Peck said. Animal control has taken them.

The mother's name has not been released. Police said children's grandfather also lived in the home.
