$5,000 reward offered for capture of culprit behind Sacramento cat burning

SACRAMENTO, CA - A $5,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the person responsible for a horrible case of animal abuse.

According to Front Street Animal Shelter Care Service Manager Gina Knepp, a resident on Manorside Drive in South Sacramento saw a young kitten walking in the area of Manorside an Meadowglen Avenue on Aug. 9. The resident said they took notice of the kitten because it appeared to be following a person walking down the street.

The next day, the resident found the kitten in his driveway, suffering from severe burns and smelling strongly of gasoline, said Knepp.

The Samaritan took the kitten to the South Sacramento Veterinary Hospital and paid for the necessary treatment, then took the cat home.

Several days later, the person was forced to surrender the 4-month-old male kitten to the Front Street Animal Shelter when its condition did not seem to be improving.

Pet of the Week- Drew

Pet of the Week- Drew

Our sweet girl Drew is up for adoption! This happy, goofy, three-year-old love bug is a staff and volunteer favorite here at the shelter. She has been with us since May, and we are determined to find her a home! Drew is great with other dogs and older kids. She is energetic and lively, but just enough to balance out her snuggling, cuddle-bug side.

BloodSource Assists Patients and Pets this Summer

BloodSource Assists Patients and Pets this Summer

BloodSource is helping patients - and animal shelter pets - this summer by matching the number of blood drive participants with bags of food to be donated to Titanic’s Pantry, also known as the Sacramento Pet Food Bank*. Many of our blood donors have a soft spot in their hearts for abandoned pets and this is a novel way to help. Blood donors should refer to Donor Club #2127 when they donate blood at any BloodSource Donor Center or mobile blood drive from July 29 to August 4, 2013. Western Feed & Pet Supply has partnered to provide the bags of pet food at a discount.

The Midtown BloodSource Donor Center at 1608 Q. Street has partnered specifically with City of Sacramento Front Street Animal Services and Western Feed & Pet Supply to host a Bow-Meow Blood Drive on Tuesday, July 30, from 9:00 a.m.

Snow leopard dies at Sacramento Zoo

SACRAMENTO, CA - A snow leopard at the Sacramento Zoo had to be euthanized Friday after she suffered a back injury.

Shanti, 20, was found injured Sunday, July 7, when keepers noticed that she was unable to move around comfortably. Zoo veterinarians found that Shanti had damaged her vertebrae.

Vets treated Shanti's injuries and put her on antibiotics and pain medication. However, Shanti's condition deteriorated because of neurological complications and an infection. Because of her poor health and quality of life, zoo vets and animal care staff decided to euthanize Shanti.

"Shanti is an icon at the Zoo, an excellent and patient mother and an incredible character," Zoo Mammal Supervisor Leslie Field said. "She was well loved and will be missed by keepers and visitors alike."

SPCA Pet of the Week- Tia

Meet Tia!
A great conversationalist who is looking for a family who will enjoy her take on life. She has been chatting with volunteers and staff since she came to the shelter back in March. Tia (two-years-old) has waited patiently for the right family to come along. She gets along great with people and is curious about what you're up to. She also does well with other cats.
