Sunny days ahead for the California Automobile Museum

Sunny days ahead for the California Automobile Museum

The California Auto Museum has successfully completed the purchase of its building and surrounding property from the City of Sacramento, achieving a long-held dream of Museum management and enthusiasts. Located at 2200 Front Street in Sacramento’s emerging waterfront district, the Museum also announced it has reached the ambitious goal of raising $750,000 from friends and supporters to replace the badly leaking roof. Construction on the roof replacement will begin this week.

“These two events mark what may be the two most significant achievements in the California Automobile Museum’s 30-year history,” said Tupper Hull, President of the Board of Directors of the California Vehicle Foundation (which operates the Museum). “We are deeply appreciative of the support we have received from the City of Sacramento, involved community members and museum enthusiasts in helping to make these two momentous events possible.”

The special art and history project is part of a larger effort that spans many years, covers multiple rivers and is designed to encourage an awareness of issues facing current river communities, detail the long history of people who have lived and worked on and adjacent to the river, and highlight basic river ecology. Guests to the History Museum will have the opportunity to see photos, view artifacts and read narratives that showcase the past river travels of Santa Cruz Artist Wes Modes on his homemade houseboat or “rustic recreated 1940s shantyboat” as he meticulously documented the people he met along the way. In addition to the visual and narrative components of the exhibit, museum guests will be able to interact with the exhibit by sharing personal river stories on special cards provided.

It’s official…the Railroad Museum is now recognized as a Smithsonian affiliate

California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum & Foundation are proud to announce the California State Railroad Museum is now officially recognized as a Smithsonian Affiliate.

“We are delighted to officially begin our Affiliate partnership with the California State Railroad Museum, an organization which has previously worked alongside the Smithsonian in scholarship and historic preservation,” said Myriam Springuel, Interim Director, Smithsonian Affiliations. “The story of railroading is very much the story of building the foundation of the United States and we are proud to partner with this museum which tells this national story from its beginnings in California. The collections, scholarship and expertise of the Smithsonian will be well matched by those at the California State Railroad Museum; we expect both organizations to benefit a great deal from this collaborative relationship.”
