History Museum to debut secret history exhibit as artist embarks on new journey on the Sacramento

The Sacramento History Museum is proud to present a compelling new exhibit titled A Secret History of American River People opening on Saturday, July 1, 2017. The special art and history project is part of a larger effort that spans many years, covers multiple rivers and is designed to encourage an awareness of issues facing current river communities, detail the long history of people who have lived and worked on and adjacent to the river, and highlight basic river ecology. Guests to the History Museum will have the opportunity to see photos, view artifacts and read narratives that showcase the past river travels of Santa Cruz Artist Wes Modes on his homemade houseboat or “rustic recreated 1940s shantyboat” as he meticulously documented the people he met along the way. In addition to the visual and narrative components of the exhibit, museum guests will be able to interact with the exhibit by sharing personal river stories on special cards provided.

It’s official…the Railroad Museum is now recognized as a Smithsonian affiliate

California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum & Foundation are proud to announce the California State Railroad Museum is now officially recognized as a Smithsonian Affiliate.

“We are delighted to officially begin our Affiliate partnership with the California State Railroad Museum, an organization which has previously worked alongside the Smithsonian in scholarship and historic preservation,” said Myriam Springuel, Interim Director, Smithsonian Affiliations. “The story of railroading is very much the story of building the foundation of the United States and we are proud to partner with this museum which tells this national story from its beginnings in California. The collections, scholarship and expertise of the Smithsonian will be well matched by those at the California State Railroad Museum; we expect both organizations to benefit a great deal from this collaborative relationship.”

New sights, sounds & experiences greet tour guests in Old Sacramento this summer

New sights, sounds & experiences greet tour guests in Old Sacramento this summer

There are plenty of exciting and new reasons to take a tour in Old Sacramento this summer, all offered by the Sacramento History Museum and Sacramento History Alliance. The ever-popular Old Sacramento Underground tours are now available seven days a week (through Labor Day) that include new archaeology exhibits and recently added sounds of 1860 street life in the hollow sidewalks. Earlier this year, weekend Gold Fever! tours were added where guests become part of the story and tour by taking on the persona of (often rascally) Gold Rush era characters. The new Gold Fever! tours depart from the newly renovated Sacramento Visitors Center (corner of 2nd & J) in Old Sacramento which provides reason enough to stop in for a visit.  Plus, during the month of June, a complimentary pass to visit the Sacramento History Museum will be provided to everyone who purchases a tour ticket (i.e. Old Sacramento Underground, Underground After Hours or Gold Fever! tours).
