Call Out for Volunteers at State Indian Museum This Fall!

For the upcoming fall season, the State Indian Museum needs positive and enthusiastic community volunteers to embark on an exciting and educational journey as State Park docents. The State Indian Museum is located on the grounds of Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park.  Applications are now being accepted for volunteer positions and comprehensive training is provided.  Interested volunteers must apply and be interviewed in advance.

New board chair chosen for Mutual Housing

Mindy Romero has been appointed the new chair of the board of directors Sacramento|Yolo Mutual Housing Association. She replaces Greg Chew, who remains on the board.

A researcher at the Center for Regional Change, University of California, Davis, Romero also is a doctoral candidate in the UCD Department of Sociology.

Romero has been on the board for the past three years and was with the Yolo Mutual Housing Association’s board before the two nonprofits affiliated. She lives in Davis.

Mutual Housing develops and operates well-designed rental housing for modest-income households. The communities have 2,600 residents, half of whom are children.

Through Mutual Housing’s focus on leadership, the nonprofit also provides training and mentoring as well as educational programs, community-building activities and services for residents and neighbors. For more information, visit  http://www.mutualhousing.com.

Sunflower Market to open in Land Park in 2012

Sunflower Farmers Market, the full-service grocer offering high-quality natural and organic products at low prices, has officially announced it will open a new store in in Land Park  in early 2012.

The new Sunflower Farmers Market will take over the long-vacant 20,436 square foot building in Land Park Center, located at Land Park Drive and Sutterville Road. Just south of downtown Sacramento and the Sacramento Zoo, Land Park Center also houses Parkside Pharmacy and the well-known Sacramento La Bou Bakery. The building that Sunflower will inhabit, at 440 Del Rio Road, will be significantly upgraded before the grocer moves in.

Sunflower’s CEO, Chris Sherrell, acknowledges that the grocer’s expansion into California is on the fast track. “We feel very comfortable with our expansion into Northern California, as Sunflower’s array of natural and organic products is an ideal complement to the healthy lifestyles so evident in the area,” said Sherrell.

Mutual Housing raises nearly $65,000 at annual breakfast

Sacramento|Yolo Mutual Housing Association recently raised nearly $65,000 at their second Building Up Breakfast in one-time donations and multi-year pledges. As expected, attendance was higher this year than at the inaugural event in 2010.

Thanks to the sponsors, Bank of America, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Roseville Bank of Commerce, Sierra Health Foundation and Vital Networks, the nonprofit will be able to use all the money donated by individuals for programs, services and operations

Jerry Way Receives National APWA Top Ten Public Works Award

Sacramento, CA – The American Public Works Association (APWA) recently awarded the City of Sacramento’s Director of Transportation Jerry Way one of the national 2011 Top Ten Public Works Leaders of the Year. Way has been with the City of Sacramento for more than 30 years and was the APWA Sacramento Chapter President in 2009. Each Top Ten Public Works Leader will be honored during the Awards Ceremony as part of the APWA 2011 International Public Works Congress & Exposition in Denver, Colorado, September 18-21, 2011. Way was also presented the award locally on Thursday, May 19, 2011 by APWA Sacramento Chapter President, Matt Brogan at the Chapter’s 10th Annual National Public Works Week Awards Dinner.

APWA annually recognizes 10 of the most outstanding public works professionals from across the U.S.

Mutual Housing prepares more than 700 free tax returns

With a volunteer cadre, Sacramento Mutual Housing Association and its partners prepared and filed 715 free tax returns this year that helped working families with incomes of $49,000, or less, claim much-needed Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC).

Of these, 560 returns were prepared in conjunction with the American Association of Retired Persons. A pilot program for Mutual Housing, this was the first year that AARP tax preparation was held at the local nonprofit's Lemon Hill community in South Sacramento.

Another 155 returns were filed as part of the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program held at two other Mutual Housing sites, Foothill Plaza and Victory Townhomes in North Sacramento and Del Paso, respectively.
