Raley's Supermarket customers can donate to Japan Relief Fund till this Monday

Customers of Raley’s Family of Stores can still give to the Japan Disaster Relief Fund till early next week.

The campaign has been running since the middle of March, but will be ending this Monday, April 18.

Raley’s had announced that it would designate all donations to checkstand collection boxes in its 133 Raley’s, Bel Air, Nob Hill Foods and Food Source stores. 100% of the donations will go directly to the American Red Cross to help the devastated area.

Raley’s will absorb all administrative costs to ensure that all donations reach the victims of the devastation in Japan.

“The impact of this disaster has been absolutely catastrophic,” said Ashley Zepernick, Raley’s Spokeswoman.

Contributor of the Month: Blogger Catherine Enfield

Contributor of the Month: Blogger Catherine Enfield

The contributor of the month piece will highlight a My Neighborhood blogger who has posted multiple pieces during the month and is doing something exciting. The contributor of the month is picked by News10 My Neighborhood staff.

I met up with Catherine Enfield at the Sugar and Spice Bakery at 12th and F. Bakery Owner Carissa went about her afternoon as she baked more treats and helped patrons pick out their perfect dessert.

Catherin and I stood in the corner and chatted about her blog Munchie Musings.

“The Munchie Musings is actually an appropriate title because if I had to think of a mission statement it would be thoughts, musings, about food and life,” Catherine explained.

Greenspan's extraordinary french lemon cream tart

Greenspan's extraordinary french lemon cream tart

For those unfamiliar, Dorie Greenspan is one of the best cookbook author's out there. This recipe comes from her book, Baking: From My Home to Yours . Therefore, I can't really give you the recipe, only tell you to buy the book. I've been making several of the recipes and they are all high quality desserts. This one a great because it can be broken down into parts, I did the lemon filling one day and the crust a few days later.

Here you can see me with the lemon mixture over a steaming pot of water. What is interesting about her version is that you cook the lemon egg mixture first up to 180 degrees. Then you transfer it to a blender, wait for it to cool to 140 degrees, and then blend it with butter to make it light and creamy. I did have a problem with reaching 180 degrees.

Review: Iron Steaks

Review: Iron Steaks

Iron Steaks is owned by the same folk who own Willie's Burgers, just four blocks further down. But where Willie's is super casual, Iron Steaks goes toward the other end of the spectrum, where you go for an expensive steak. Think Ruth's Chris or Morton's in that you are going to order a piece of meat and then order sides separately.
