7 self-awareness questions to aid student success

7 self-awareness questions to aid student success

With the 2016-2017 school year upon us, preparing our students to start off strong is a necessity that must not be overlooked. School supplies and school clothes are definitely great but if we neglect to help our students become more self-aware, we'll be making a tragic mistake. Business genius, Gary Vaynerchuk says, "Self-Awareness is the game...when you know yourself, you win". I like to say, "When you know yourself, success is more easily attained. As the father of a 1st grader, 8th grader and 9th grader, I desire for my children to be successful. As the oldest of 7 brothers and sisters, I want my younger siblings to be successful. Wesley Saeteurn, 17, is a senior at Gerber Jr./Sr. High School in the Sacramento County Office of Education and an editor of his school newspaper. He contributed this essay to The SacCounty Breeze, a collaboration of philanthropist Rowland Rebele, The Sacramento Bee, The Sacramento County Office of Education, and the California Scholastic Journalism Initiative.

For six years and counting I have lost someone very close to me to the system.

I was 11 years old when he was locked up in Lancaster in Los Angeles County. He will not be able to get out for another 12 years, minimum.

The feelings I have are hard to explain. I don't know why but when I think about it, it hurts. I get a burning sensation on my face, and I get filled with anger and regret.

The Multimedia Journalism Summer Academy for High School Students wrapped up at Sacramento State with students producing video projects on their smartphones.

News10’s George Warren and former News10 anchor Sharon Ito led the weeklong workshop, where students toured the News10 studios and received hands-on training in shooting, writing and editing a video story.  (Click to see the News10 photo album.)
