Sacramento to Celebrate National Wear Red Day with Fashion Show Feb. 7

The American Heart Association in Sacramento will celebrate the 11th anniversary of National Wear Red Day with its own Wear Red Day event and first-ever Go Red fashion show at Arden Fair mall on Friday, February 7.

The fashion show will feature local heart disease survivors, cardiologists and volunteers. Women, men and families of all ages are invited to attend the celebration and to help raise awareness of heart disease as the number one killer of women by wearing red.

The event is free to the public and will also include free health screenings provided by Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute, red lipstick matching provided by Macy’s, kids zone with balloon art from Twistin Tim, autograph signing with the Sacramento Kings dancers and Slamson and chances to win Macy’s gift cards. The festivities are scheduled to take place from 10am to 2pm in the center court of Arden Fair.

“We’ve had the good fortune of being able to work with Arden Fair on this event over the past few years and they have all been greatly successful, but this year we’re even more excited because of the first-ever Go Red fashion show which will feature some of our very own patients and cardiologists,” said Rick Harrell, regional service line executive for Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute and volunteer spokesperson for the American Heart Association. “This is a cause we have supported for many years and we hope to continue to see it grow. Heart disease continues to be the greatest health threat to women and kills more women each year than all forms of cancer combined. This is a great opportunity to generate more awareness and invite even more people to take up the cause so that we can continue making progress on this critical health issue.”

In recognition of the 11th National Wear Red Day on February 7, 2014, the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women asks that across America, Women Go Red. Since the inception of the movement, more than 627,000 women have been saved from heart disease and 330 fewer women are dying per day. Women who Go Red are more likely to make healthy choices with nearly 90 percent making at least one healthy behavior change and more than one-third having lost weight. More than 40 percent have checked their cholesterol levels while one-third have talked with their doctors about developing heart health plans.

But the fight is far from over. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease causes one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by heart disease and 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
