Make It a Festival Night in Sacramento

Make It a Festival Night in Sacramento

We're halfway through summer, which means it's festival time! Here are a few ways you can get your grub on at some of Sacramento's upcoming festivals.

161st Annual California State Fair, Cal Expo, July 11-27
As always, there will be hundreds of food vendors on hand at the historic fair at Cal Expo -- spaghetti ice cream, chocolate covered bacon, or fried anything -- but I especially can't wait to pick up some fresh produce from the Friends of the State Fair Farmers Market to help me stay on my healthy track! For details.

Center for Sacramento History Presents Speaker Series -- Mining California: An Ecological History

Center for Sacramento History Presents Speaker Series -- Mining California: An Ecological History

The Center for Sacramento History is proud to present a special Speaker Series event -- Mining California: An Ecological History on Wednesday evening, July 16.

The community is invited to attend this thought-provoking presentation by historian and Temple University Professor Andrew C. Isenberg, who will address the systematic exploitation of the Golden State’s natural resources. The rapid industrialization of logging, ranching, farming, mining and urbanization burdened the state’s primitive environment. Isenberg will cover how California’s environment was never submissive and how nature proved to be capricious and maddening to those engaged in turning it into wealth.  At the conclusion of his presentation, Isenberg will answer questions and sign copies of his book, Mining California: An Ecological History (available for purchase that evening).

Sacramento Museums to Showcase Variety & Diversity With Interactive Booth at the Fair

Sacramento Museums to Showcase Variety & Diversity With Interactive Booth at the Fair

For the first time ever, the Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) will offer an interactive and fun booth at the California State Fair (July 11-27, 2014) in an effort to showcase the variety and diversity of offerings available in our region.   State Fair guests are invited to imagine, explore and discover more about local museums and destinations at the visually-exciting Sacramento Museums booth that will be located in Building A on the bottom floor next to the State Fair Post Office.

In addition to providing helpful information about all 30 SAM member museums, the Sacramento Museums booth will include a number of hands-on activities every day that include the following:

Sacramento Independence Day Celebration at Cal Expo

Spend your Fourth on the Field!

Still searching for something to do this July 4th? Come out and celebrate our nation’s birthday on the baseball field! Raley Field will bring the neighborhood block party feel to the River Cats' home turf this Friday night.

In the evening, kiddos can enjoy a fun-filled kids area equipped with games, coloring pages, face painters, and inflatable structures; local food trucks, beer, and live music from Nunchuck Taylor will entertain grown-ups.

To cap off the night, find a comfy spot on the field and watch the night sky above the ballpark light up with a spectacular fireworks show synced to patriotic music at 9:30pm. (Blankets are okay; no chairs are allowed on the field.)
